Welcome to Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School's Marketing Education Website. Please take a minute to learn about what we do. Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School is one of a few schools in the state of Michigan that has an international marketing program. In this program, the students learn how to market internationally as well as domestically.In addition, we have one of the strongest vocational student organizations (DECA) in the state. With approximately 165 members, we not only have the second largest chapter in the state of Michigan, but we also have the largest chapter in the city of Detroit. Within our school we have two advisors, two separate chapters and six sub-chapters. Each sub-chapter has its own set of officers. The DECA chapter at King High School started over 40 years ago. Since then, we have had five Presidents, twelve vice- presidents, and have won numerous awards at the local state and national levels. Our chapter has travels throughout the country participating in various DECA events and conferences. In 2005, 18 DECA students traveled to De Moines, Iowa where they participated in activities that are designed to help them become productive and contributing citizens when they become adults. They also interacted with other DECA members, advisors, business leaders and vendors from throughout the Midwest United States. In October 2006, twelve members traveled to Lansing, Michigan where they participated in the state leadership conference. During the conference, they attended workshops geared toward their particular career/occupational interest. They also attended workshops that helped them gain a better understanding of DECA and the competitive events.In addition, they participated in a focus session where they not only enhanced their leadership and communication skills, they also participated in activities designed to develop team building and trust. In November 2006, a delegation of King High School DECA students were among 188 Michigan DECA students who traveled to New York City where we participated in various marketing career tracks. The purpose of the conference was to give the students an opportunity to gain first hand knowledge about how various businesses/organizations operated and marketed their organizations/products. Some of the career tracks included: Fashion Merchandising, Hospitality, Sports and Entertainment and Finance. In addition to gaining insight into the operation and marketing strategies for many prestigious businesses, we also went two broadway shows and one off broadway show. This was an outstanding experience for our members. Our members have competed and won at the district, state and national levels. During the history of our DECA program we have always had a qualifier to attend the International Career Development Conference. Last spring, six of our members traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they competed in an Entrepreneurship Competition. Our members walked away with the two top honors. They were selected as the outstanding entrepreneurship company and the student choice award. Not only are we competitive, we are very community and civic minded. We raise money for charitable organizations and assist organizations and businesses with workshops, campaigns, community fairs, festivals and training programs. We are the only school that has a standing invitation to attend the luncheons of the Detroit Economic Club, where we interact with business leaders, government officials and representatives from all over the world.
